I found this video from The Daily Show really amusing. It takes the idea of migrants from Latin American going to the United States and turns it on its head and focuses on Americans who become digital nomads and live in Mexico City. It addresses some serious issues, but it does so in a lighthearted way.
I could relate to many of the jokes and the things they talked about. However, it’s pretty clear that the digital nomads they are talking about are not necessarily the same as a wandering YouTuber. I suppose it comes down to income level. There’s a telling moment in the main interview when the American digital nomad talks about the benefits of the lower living costs in Mexico. And she says that she can go out for a night of drinking tequila with her friends, and it “only” costs $70 US.
And that shows that these digital nomads are operating on an entirely different level. They are American career professionals being paid a full American professional salary but spending it in Mexico. In the world of every YouTuber I know, nobody is spending $70 on a night of drinking.
