VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
I always love to check out a new neighborhood or district in Kuala Lumpur, and when my friend Daryl invited me along on an errand run to Setapak, I quickly said yes.
VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
Welcome back to what could turn into another Planet Doug vignettes video. And by vignettes, I mean just a series of little unrelated clips, things that I end up doing here in KL. And quite often the things I end up doing are thanks to my friend Daryl. There he is over there. And Jamie over there. And I’m out on an errand run with Daryl. He’s getting his famous BYD car serviced over there at the BYD service center. And we’re a little bit early and Daryl’s planning ahead and thought, well, since we’re going to be there early, let’s go for something to eat at Ipoh Delicious restaurant, one of Daryl’s favorite places. I don’t know anything about Ipoh Delicious. I don’t know what they serve or why they’re famous. I’m sure it has a good reputation. If Daryl, if it’s on Daryl’s radar, means it’s good. So, here’s the yeah, the interior. Yeah, kind of casual, which I like.
They even have a story to tell. For a faithful taste of Kai Si Hor Fun, head to restaurant Ipoh Delicious in Setapak, which I guess that’s where we are. Oh, so that seems to be their specialty, Kai Si Hor Fun.
The harmony between the base chicken and sweeter crustacean notes in the broth often a shimmering clear cool tinged orange.
You want the ice or Yes, please. Ice. Yeah, ice.
And I’m just letting Daryl order some food. There’s no point my even being involved. He’ll get that all figured out. It’s a great kitchen area.
Explain please where are we? Why are we here? What are they famous for? All that stuff. You’re on. Oh, is it recording? Action. So we are here in Setapak. Here Setapak. Setapak. That’s the name of the food. No no Setapak is basically the whole area. Oh yeah. So further up there’s a Setapak Central Mall. So that’s the focus point but the whole road is basically Seta the whole area. There’s a huge shopping area behind here and we are actually at the here because of I’m servicing my car at BYD Setapak. And it’s not open yet. So it’s at 9:00 a.m. We are a little bit early. So I’m taking D and Jamie here at Ipoh Delicious to try their noodles. Now, of all the places I’ve had in KL is one of the better ones, which is the closest people that you can find. Okay. Because of the broth, so kway teow I was reading over here on the wall. Yes. The Kai Si Hor Fun. Yes. Is that made with kway teow noodles? But here the the is slightly thinner. You see, but and softer as well. So the one that we’re having is the very first. Okay. All right. The one that is very popular in you have different versions. Some with prawn, some without chicken, shredded chicken. I ordered it. Okay. Sounds good. Have something similar. We’re going to have lunch again. Sounds good. Breakfast. It turns out that whole story on the wall is actually a newspaper article or magazine article or online article talking about all the food in this restaurant and they’re talking about how you have to get the bean sprouts and you have to get the steamed chicken. Lo and behold, Daryl knows that. So, look what we have on the table. Bean sprouts and steamed chicken. So, yeah, this is the special chili that comes with it. for the chicken. Okay, that’s for the the chicken. Okay, man. So, this is mine. Okay. Okay. Wow. Fast service. So, Oh, yours is the prawn. Yes, it’s got prawn. My favorite. And mine is the shredded chicken. Thank you.
And what did you get? He’s the same as yours. Okay. The shredded chicken. Okay. But the the you can see the broth, right? So it’s so rich. Yeah. So it’s amazing place. The article says for the best flavor, you have to get the dry. Oh, okay. What do you think about that? Yeah. Yeah. Yes. I I I do prefer soup for style. I don’t know. That’s just me. But we can always try one if you like.
That should be the I have to start with my ice cham. Always a highlight for me.
Yeah. Nice. You could I think you could actually get get into cham almost like wine. You could talk about the the the fruity flavors, the this that the other cuz I’ve had so many different types of iced cham. There really is a subtle difference in the flavor from place to place, but I don’t have the vocabulary to describe it. It’s because of the tea and the coffee. The tea and the coffee and the way they combine and some places uses different type of tea. Yeah. Okay. I just glanced at the menu, but the prices look pretty reasonable too, right? Like 8 9 ringgit for like one of these. 8.50. 8.50. 8.50 for this bowl of noodles. It’s not bad. So, there’s the place Ipoh Delicious in Setapak. I think Daryl said that this area is called and he said he comes there all the time for breakfast and it’s conveniently right across the road from BYD service center. There’s Jamie and Daryl over there. Daryl has some sort of an idea for us to go somewhere. I’m not exactly sure where we’re going. He’s keeping it as a surprise, but he says we have to go off on a little bit of a walk. So, we are walking somewhere. He’s threatened us several times already that we’re going for a long walk, but I can’t imagine it would end up being that long. Let’s see where we end up. Yeah. I don’t know if I’ve ever been out this way before. I love to look up. Planet Doug motto, always look up. So you see the you know the buildings around. Interesting color scheme. All these buildings here, the brown and the white all matching this whole complex. Apparently this long walk involves risking our life as a pedestrian getting across this busy street.
Jamie’s pretty good at this sort of thing, huh? I thought he would have gone for it right there. Keep looking back to see whether they’ve lost me. I thought we were crossing. Anyway,
looks like a large residential area. Look at all these apartment complexes over there. Toyota dealership.
Set. I’ll have to ask Daryl what Setapak is known for. Does it have a reputation in Kuala Lumpur?
So, are we trying to cross? Is that what we’re doing?
We were thinking of crossing, but it looks a bit high. Oh. So, I’m afraid we might. In the past, I’ve carried my bike over fences, like just picked it up and climbed the fence. You think you think a little thing like that is going to scare a Canadian and an American like Jamie?
The traffic here is pretty fast though. That’s the problem,
man. What a roar from the traffic. Yeah. Yeah. Very
life of a KL pedestrian.
We made it. We’re still alive. We’re all in one piece.
There are many Korean restaurants, especially Korean barbecue restaurants. So, is this district sett? Yes. Is it known as more of a residential area? Yeah. Yeah. Daryl was saying that this yellow apartment building complex is very popular with students because we’re close to a university and a lot of these buildings, this commercial complex here is all named after uh some sort of company Platinum. Like you can see a building over there called Platinum 2. And you’ll see that around here all these different buildings. This place just newly opened the sai food. It’s halal. Sai food. Halal. Halal. But Chinese Muslim. Yeah. They decorate very nice. They even have this smoking area. You can see the way they
little piece of Thailand.
At night they serve the the thy roti here. Okay. And you can smell it when you walk past it.
Looks like they have one of these super super cold stations. You can get your drink like below freezing. Very cold.
Ah, check that out. That is quite the decor. Nothing says Thailand quite like elephants. Southern Thai food. I guess it’s yeah, halal.
Just happened to be going by a superb bike shop GS cycle set. I I don’t know. I don’t know how to say the name. And it looks like the they’re closed, but we can look at some of the bikes on the outside. Look at these beasts. Whoa. What is this one? Says it’s sold. So, you can’t have it even if you want it. I I don’t even recognize. You guys know like Jamie, you’re What brand is this one? I have no idea. See the logo there? Yeah. Yamaha. It’s a Yamaha. No. Yeah. Yamaha. Very unusual.
And you were just saying, Jamie, you have experience riding things like this. And you owned one. Yeah. What did you own? The last one was Suzuki uh Vstrom. Not quite the Ninja, but that similar to that. Okay. Damn. You learn more and more about this guy. Yeah, exactly. Right. He’s a food expert and he gets around town on one of these super machines. Yeah. I’ve never driven one of these. I I wouldn’t even know how to be honest.
Oh, they even have the keys out here.
Look at these. This is the one that I spotted originally. this Kawasaki. I didn’t know we were at a superbike shop. But look at that. What an amazing design.
I’m more of a scooter guy. If I was going to travel around Malaysia, I I would pick a Even these scooters way too big for me. I don’t need anything nearly that big. I’d like a very simple small scooter. That would be my style. Just putt putt around. Yeah, even these scooters are too big for me. Too much like a motorcycle.
Maybe this one right here. Yeah, I could get around Malaysia on this one. That would be my speed right there. The hotel seeds over there in that complex. I don’t know why I’m so attracted to apartment buildings, but these big complexes I find kind of fascinating. As Daryl said, these are popular with students because of its proximity to a major university, but I can’t imagine all of those apartments being taken by students. So, there’s all kinds of people staying there. I’m sure families as well.
There’s Jamie’s favorite, apam balik.
Hello. Hello.
I continue to be amazed at how many restaurants of all varieties there are in Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur in particular. It’s like just there’s just no end to them. Here we are in this new sort of a mall area. Just restaurant after restaurant after restaurant. Feels like there’s more restaurants in this one neighborhood than in all of Canada put together.
This place is packed in the evening. You can’t you you get stuck probably 45 minutes just try in here if you’re driving. It’s so damn popular.
They have a lot of good. I was just saying that there’s more restaurants just here than all of Canada put together. What the hell? And such a variety like Yeah, a lot of variety. That’s why a lot of people come here. Bi bim bop. Yeah. And you there are some on the first floor as well. Yeah. Okay. Look at that. More up on the second floor. Huh. This place is popular this one. And you guys have to check out this shop. Ah, KG snacks. KG snacks. They sell all the different different snacks all in small quantities. You can even buy one. Oh, yeah. It’s so cool this shop. Love it. Love it. Love it.
The Daryl said this place is pretty interesting. KG’s Snacks. And the logo seems to be a kangaroo. So maybe KG stands for kangaroos snacks. I don’t really know. 400 stores nationwide and worldwide. So I’m not sure which one is like 400 in Malaysia or 400 around the world. I don’t really know. But I guess the idea is you can buy small amounts of each snack. But yeah, just going to go inside and walk around for a minute. Get some air conditioning, too. KG snacks.
Oh, look at that. Okay, so there’s a sign here that says sold by the gram, even one piece. So, if you wanted to sample the whole bunch of stuff, you can just help yourself. You don’t have to buy a big package of anything. I don’t even recognize anything really. All they have a lot of China or Taiwan. I saw the sign that said 400 stores, but it’s not clear whether Not here. Not in Malaysia though. Not in Malaysia. Cuz it does say nationwide. Yeah, probably in China. I guess that means worldwide. I guess worldwide. Yeah. But I was just sharing with Jamie it’s a great place to come and appease your curiosity like Yeah. If you want to try something then buy it and try it.
Mothers preparing lunches for their kids. Yeah. You get all these but a little snack. True. True. The colors practically burn your eyeballs. Everything is so bright. Green, red, blue, orange. Look at that. Burn your eyeballs. Fun little containers, too. Like little uh soda bottles.
All right. See what they say about instructions. How to buy snacks. Step one, start with a bag or a car. Pack up the snacks. The front desk weighs and pays. Oh, that’s funny. Sounds like they pay as well, but no, you pay. The front desk weighs and then you pay, obviously.
And this looks like a mango drink of some kind. I think I’m going to get a drink, but I have to choose wisely.
Time to sample my mango juice.
That is nice. That is real. That is real mango juice. That’s very, very good. How much was that? 3.90. I don’t know if that’s a good price or not, but it Yeah, it seems okay. Yeah. No, that’s very It feels like freshly freshly made mango juice. Like they just made it on the spot with a bunch of mangoes.
Ah, so good. Very, very good. Just coming out the other end of this one section. There’s the Mala dry pot, 616 Noodle House, Tacumi Steamboat, Lucky Cup, Bingue Ice Cream Place. Huh. Oh, I lost them. There they are over there. There’s I’m always falling behind. We’ve come across a new part of Setapak Setapak Village. I better get this straight in my head, Darl. It’s Setapak or Setapak? Setapak Setapak. Setapak. Setapak. And this is Setapak Village. Yeah. So, this whole area is Setapak Village. Last time they had a lot of cash and carry food store binton and the whole works. But now a lot of eateries now. A lot of eateries. Yeah. What is cash and carry? What does that mean? Cash and carry is like a wholesale kind of place. Yeah. So, there’s one the largest is this one. There’s one here. Okay. Cash and carry. There’s a furniture shop down here as well. Okay. But we’re going in there. So, okay. Come in the brew house. Yeah. That’s why you brought us here. Oh, yeah. It’s a bit too early.
You can see a lot of furniture. Sure. There’s a yeah, another uh it’s called Sigi. Uh it’s a popular local uh hypermarket.
So families outfitting their apartment could come here get some good deals on furniture. Yeah. Food as well like a like cheap supermarket stuff. Yeah. There’s some fine dining here as well. Is it over there? Fine dining. Yeah, a limo up market cafes and all that. Okay. Pickle Porch. Yeah. Pickle. Yeah. Because it’s a pickle ball court over there. Oh, okay. There’s a sushi. Sushi. Yeah. There is a place last time. I don’t know where it was, but u it’s for the kids to do uh diving for kids. Yeah. So, this is a Chinese hot pot. They they are so popular. They have a process. Yeah. Just about to say. Yeah. Q for dine in some. So take away or dine in. Yeah. They do they do have many. Yeah. But the coffee is we’re here for the coffee, baby. Okay. Can I get you a cham again? I might go coffee. Like milky coffee. Like milk hot milk coffee. Hot. Hot.
going to take a risk that their hot coffee is actually hot. Sort of see. So, I guess when they’re really busy, they have to you wait for a seat ticket to be assigned. Takeaway express lane. It’s one of these places you have to come here with an expert and then you learn the system. Daryl, of course, already knows everything there is to know.
So what’s the normal ordering system here? You just sit down and then what? Oh no, you you can uh go to the counters and order. Okay. Yeah, which I will do so now. But this then at the end you take this to pay the bill. Oh okay. Yeah. So basically this whole place is singular owner. It’s not it’s not like a hawker center. Oh, right. But these are all one one owner. They all they all belong to them. Okay. Okay. Okay. Yeah. So, how do they know it’s goes to this table or to that bill? To the table. You have to mention to them when you order. You’re at table 12. And where do you get table 12 from? When you come in, they’ll pass you. They’ll pass you. They’ll assign. Yeah. Oh, okay. So, they assign you a table or
So, we all just got cold drink or hot and cold drinks. Jamie saying that’s a good cup of coffee. Yeah. Very good. Ice jam. And I got hot coffee for some reason. Why I got hot coffee, I can’t tell you, but I did. And I’m going to give it a try.
Yeah, it’s got that whole Kong coffee thing going on. Yeah, very strong. Little bit of a bitter tinge to it. It’s good coffee. It’s nice and hot. Yeah, it’s a good mug, too. Very rare for me to approve of a hot cup of coffee, but I like this one. I just remember it was not meant to. And since Daryl, you got out of my sight, food starts arriving. Yeah. It’s like kai butter toast, right? Again, that classic here. The popular is because they the kaya they made themselves. Yeah. So, it goes together, too. Yeah. Yeah. Two together. Two together. None for me. Both. For both. Yeah. Yeah. I had it before. No, no, no, no. Please, please enjoy it. It’s hot. It’s like burning steam butter. Burning my fingers. Oh man. Got to get got to get this quick. All the butter is going to melt.
Yeah. Classic combination right there. Oh yeah. Yeah. Kampung coffee and kai butter toast. It’s not really toast though. sort of like super heated. Super heated. Steamed steamed there. There’s a toast version, but I ordered the steam one, too. Okay. Try something different. Very sweet. Very, very sweet. A combination of the sweet and the salty with the butter. Yeah.
Lighting goes well with this, right? Yeah.
No problem. I’m just worried about getting butter all over me.
Very good. The last one. Oh, got to dip it in. There you go.
So, that’s the place where we just had our coffee. Really nice in there. Thong Kee. And it’s much more organized than I thought. I always like to figure out the ordering process, but you basically you just go in and as you go in, they’ll give you a slip of paper with your table number on it and that’s it. Then you sit at your table and you take your table number slip of paper to all these different windows cuz they’re not separate owners. They’re all owned by Thong Kee. And then you just order here, order there or whatever you want to order. They assign it your bill to table 12 and then you can pay and you’re all done. Yeah. Wantan mee over there for about 10 ringgit. Nasi lemak kinds of good food in there. Very popular place. funky. Yeah, I’m not sure what’s going to happen with the weather here. We got rain moving in and we’ve walked far away from the or it feels like we’ve walked far away from the BYD dealership. We have to go back there to pick up Daryl’s car eventually, but I think Daryl’s taking us to the Setapak Central now. He’s taking us on a tour of Setapak. Yeah, look at those apartment buildings. Ah, I love to go up to the top of one of those. Get a view from up there. Oh, yeah. Pickle ball court here.
That’s funny. Never played pickle ball.
This is the pickle porch.
It’s basically tennis but with different balls, different rackets, smaller court, but very similar to tennis, I guess. All right, let’s go. We just walked by what looked like a pretty nice park. I think there’s a lake over here with a park. We may maybe we can pop in there on the way back, but Daryl is bringing us to Setapak Central. So this is Setapak Central, the shopping center here.
Now we’re inside the mall. Nice air conditioning. Feels so good when you step inside. Even though it’s a cloudy day with the rain coming down, it’s still pretty humid out there. So I was starting to feel the heat as we walked along. As Daryl warned us, we are going to be walking on this tour of Setapak. Yeah, there’s the uh shopping mall.
Not a huge mall. It doesn’t look like goes up uh two floors there.
I mentioned before that a lot of the development here belongs to the same company, Platinum. And here’s a inside the mall platinum victory from 373,000 ringgit. I have no idea what that is in dollars, but here’s one of the new uh platinum housing developments. Amazing the amount of construction going on in KL. It never ceases to amaze me. See these towers going up everywhere. Seems like there aren’t enough people to fill all these buildings that they’re building, but there must be.
Yeah, I’ve never been in the market in my entire life for a home. So, all of these things that are probably second nature to most people mean nothing to me. Like, you can look at the different types of apartments available. 650 square ft, 850, 950, you know, all that kind of language. It’s all like Greek to me. I don’t know if that’s big or small. 950 ft. Is that a big apartment? Is that a small one? I have I honestly have no idea. But yeah,
back at the BYD dealership and Daryl is taking care of the things he needs to do. And they have like a customer lounge here. get a cup of coffee, relax in the air conditioning. But before I do that, I thought I’d just do a little tour. I haven’t kept up with all the newest models, so I don’t really know anything about what’s going on with the electric cars. I don’t know the model names. This is a BYD
at 2. So, this is the Atto 2. According to the sign on the floor, it is the longest in its class. Yeah, good looking family car. And this one here, bit more sporty, I guess. I don’t know what model this one is.
BYD design. This Oh, this is the Atto 3. Atto 3 Ultra. Good looking car. And this one is the Atto 2. I don’t even know how many different uh models they have.
Oh yeah, I remember this came out. I remember when this one came out. The Sea Lion. It’s a good looking car, too. Little bit unusual styling on that one.
Sea Lion. The size of the wheels, they seem big.
All right.
What’s your interest level in electric cars? You’ve had a lot of cars in your life. Would you ever go electric? I possibly am. Haven’t really looked at it that much. The inconvenience of having to charge is real negative with mentally anyway.
Just a local daily driver. Seems to make sense.
